under_public_housing SAHA manages and maintains 6,322 Public Housing rental units for eligible low-income families, seniors and people with disabilities. The rental units are located in 71 communities located throughout the City of San Antonio. What is Public Housing? (Click here to watch video) How affordable is Public Housing? The formula used in determining rental payment is the highest of the following:
  • 30% of monthly adjusted income (after allowed deductions)
  • 10% of monthly income or
  • Flat Rent (varies by property as determined by market survey)

How Long a Wait for Public Housing? As of October 2012 there are more than 18,000 applicants on the public housing waiting list.  Applicants are placed on one of three lists of their choice (family, elderly/disabled, accessible) according to unit size, and date and time of application.  The current waiting period for a unit can be anywhere from 3 – 36 months depending on availability and bedroom size.  (See Application Process-on steps to apply).
