What’s the difference among the lists?

The Voucher Program is tenant-based assistance. An applicant may use his/her voucher in any rental unit within City of Brownsville city limits in which the landlord accepts Voucher rental assistance (the majority of the apartment complexes in Brownsville accept Voucher rental assistance).

The other three wait lists are for the Villa Del Sol High Rise, Sunset Haven Apartments and Citrus Gardens Apartments. These three complexes operate in the Project Based Voucher (PBV) Program. Like the program name indicates, the assistance is based in the unit, not the person.

If you apply and are housed at any of these three PBV complexes you must reside there for at least one year. If after this, you wish to transfer to a different complex in the City of Brownsville you will be placed on a wait list of PBV families that want to transfer to the regular Voucher Program.

Villa del Sol is the 14-story high-rise in the downtown area and Sunset Haven is located off of Central Boulevard. These are both designated for elderly/disabled applicants only. Citrus Gardens Apartments is located on Grapefruit Street (next to Faulk Middle School). Citrus Gardens serves the general public.

Placement on the HCV Wait List

hacb_pic1 A wait list must be maintained when the number of applications exceeds the number of vouchers available. Applicants will be placed on the wait list according to any preference(s) for which they qualify, and the date and time of their complete application is received by the HACB.

Final application/screening process

When the applicant’s name comes up on the wait list, the family will be notified.  An application interview will be scheduled to begin the process of completing your eligibility.  All information provided to HACB by the applicant, will then be verified for accuracy and eligibility status.
